Déjà vu: Admiral Collingwood Condo Development Gets a New Owner

The beleaguered former Admiral School site at Hume and Hurontario St in Collingwood has been the subject of so much controversy since the old school was torn down in 2005. Much of the anger has centered around the process and about the height of the building located at the gateway to the downtown heritage district. Over the years, there have been frequent development announcements that never come to pass but maybe, just maybe, that is about to change?

Stonebrook Developments announced this month that it has purchased site and they intend to break ground on a development there, early in 2018, with occupancy available in 2019.   Including 127 condo units and 28,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, Stonebrook’s VP, Paul Bonwick, (yes, that’s the Mayor’s brother) says that the previously approved six-storey building plans won’t change. I’ve tried to find a website for the project and only found this so far and I can’t find a website for the development company which makes it a bit odd that they’ve announced plans and put up hoarding.  Perhaps I missed it and someone could send me a link?

They feel it will be a win-win for the community, adding a potential $1MM in tax revenue to the town’s coffers, together with integrating that (south) end of the main street with the entire downtown.  Citing current trends such as the influx of retirement age baby boomers, the developer’s spokesman feels the time is right for “Monaco”.  Seems like an apt name given the risk involved in this potentially stigmatized site.

Given the long history, controversy, players involved and changing market conditions, I will bite my tongue for now and let nature take its course.
