New Condo Director Training in Ontario

Under the new Ontario Regulation 48/01, under the Condominium Act, 1998 that became effective November 1, 2017, all condominium directors in Ontario must complete the Condominium Authority of Ontario director training program within 6 months of being appointed, elected or re-elected to a board.

Although I have been a director on a condo board for several years and am not required to complete the training at this time, I thought it would be worthwhile to ensure I keep my knowledge and skill set up to par.  The course is done online through 21 modules that cover things such as roles and responsibilities of directors, managers and owners, financial obligations and reporting, status certificates and new information about the Condominium Authority Tribunal and condominium management licensing.  It’s easy to navigate at your own pace and would likely take the average person 3-6 hours to complete.  You can stop and start whenever you wish and it always returns to where you left off.

If you own a condo, you may want to consider running for the board and if so, you will need to complete the training within six months of being elected.  I think it will make for better over-all management of condo corporation boards and therefore owner protection as well.
