When John and I were in Quebec City last year, we visited a place called Oliv and thought it would be a great idea for Collingwood. I guess wishing makes it so because May 21st saw the opening of the Collingwood Olive Oil Co. Tasting Bar and Shop on the top end of Ste. Marie St.
The shop is owned by Alex Yuen and Cheryl McMenemy who were both well-known local business people that left the area about 12 or 13 years ago and have come back to the place they love. I popped in to say welcome home and was really impressed with the clean and organized set up. Then I starting tasting from the selection of over 45 different oils and balsamics. Now remember, I’m a foodie who is not easily impressed but wow, I can tell you that I was like a kid in a candy store. The balsamic vinegar, aged 18 years, was THE BEST I have ever tasted. Then I hit the Blueberry balsamic. I suspect I may have moaned out loud by the look of others in the store but O.M.G. it was good. (I’ve been eating spinach salad with fresh strawberries and blueberry balsamic every day since.) Then, someone mentioned steak and next thing you know, an olive oil infused with roasted garlic found its way into my bag too. I have a feeling that I may have a couple of dozen oils and vinegars in my pantry before the summer is over. Oh oh.
The shop is set up to allow you to taste the products before you buy. Your selections are then freshly poured into a bottle (3 sizes available) which is then labelled and shrink wrapped for you to take home.
In addition to the oils and balsamics, the shop carries olive oil cleansers, creams and soaps, dipping dishes and other giftware. The shop is located at 42 Ste Marie St in Collingwood. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10-6 and Thursday, Friday evenings to 8 pm., closed Sunday and Monday.
Their slogan is, “More Than Just A Crush.” I agree. It’s pure love.
