One of my very favourite shops in Thornbury has just expanded into a posh new location on the main street. Owned by three dynamic women, their success is not defined by any web presence. They may be out there but I can’t even find a website or Facebook page for them. Nonetheless, their secret is out and they succeed on merit alone. This post is not about Nantucket though. It’s about something else rather unique about the Thornbury business culture.
Escarpment Magazine recently ran a feature article about the Women of Thornbury and it is a fascinating read. They point out that over 80% of businesses in the town are owned and operated by women. Everything from clothing stores like Nantucket to specialty shops, restaurants, salons and gift shops are led by women who collectively employ over 175 employees in this small community. That is a huge impact.
I love some of the comments in the article about the collaboration, support and genuine desire to support one another expressed by several of the Women-Of-Thornbury. They also talk about the value of having bought into real estate on the main street as another source of security and potential income.
In addition to employing several people, paying taxes and creating a unique vibrancy in the downtown, these businesses also support a number of local charities and local projects making their success a win-win for the whole community.
Please shop local. When you support them, you support so much more.
