Deodorize Your Home With Coffee

It is not uncommon that we need to deal with odours when selling a home.  Sometimes the smells come from smoke or pets, other times it is something rotting in a fridge, under a bed or simply stale air.  There is a pretty easy fix you might never have heard of.

A few years ago, a firefighter friend of mine told me that they will light used coffee grounds on a stove in a house when there are some serious odours to deal with.  Shortly after that, I listed a rental property for sale where the tenants had just moved out along with their entourage of pets.  Cleaning and spraying the house did not eliminate the pungent smells.  So, not really believing it would work, we put several plastic containers with fresh coffee grounds around the house, closed it up and voila – two days later it smelled just fine.

I’ve done some reading on the topic such as this article and some people suggest using fresh coffee grounds while others suggest used coffee grounds that have been dried out.  It seems that the sulphur in the roasted beans traps and binds odors so I’m not sure it matters.  I’ve tried it both ways and both ways work.

If you have stubborn odours, try it and I guarantee you’ll be surprised at how well this works.  You can put grounds in your fridge, freezer, under couches, in closets – just about anywhere,  When you are done, your garden would love to enjoy a coffee so sprinkle the spend grains around your plants and foundation which also repels pests.  I guess pests prefer soda pop.
